  • “THE REPUBLIC NEEDS YOU”: THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH OF KOMI MET WITH MEDICAL STUDENTS

On September 29, acting Minister of Health of the Komi Republic Igor Diaghilev held a roundtable discussion with students of the Medical Institute of Pitirim Sorokin Syktyvkar State University. The Chief Doctors of the Syktyvkar polyclinic No. 3 and the Ezhva city polyclinic as direct employers also answered vital questions that interested the senior students. Oksana Isakova, the Head of the Personnel Service of the Ministry of Health, replied to students’ questions about obtaining targeted referrals to medical residency. Olga Sotnikova, the Rector of Pitirim Sorokin Syktyvkar State University, greeted the senior students of the Medical Institute and introduced the guests.

Igor Diaghilev began the meeting by asking the students not to leave the Komi Republic.

“Today health care in the republic is developing rapidly. Colossal funds are spent on modern equipment for medical institutions, with plans to build large medical centers. At the same time, the most important resource – the human resource, on which all health care is based – is, unfortunately, not enough in the region. Therefore, no matter how the large cities beckon you, the republic needs you, and we, in turn, will provide all conditions so that young specialists do not leave”, stressed the acting Minister of Health of the region.

Most of the students of the Medical Institute of Pitirim Sorokin Syktyvkar State University were interested in employment issues and supporting measures. The acting minister spoke about the programs for providing doctors with housing.

In addition, medical organizations make compensation for the rental of housing to those specialists who need it.

“Chief Doctors and Heads of Municipalities are interested in attracting a physician and helping to keep him on-site. Therefore, the issues of housing, provision of places in schools and kindergartens for children will be resolved,” the Head of the Republic’s Medical Department emphasized.

Igor Dyaglilev also pointed out that attracting personnel to rural areas should be not only due to monetary incentives, but also a competent mentoring system:

“The student must come to practice at the place of future work from the first year. So he will better understand ins and outs of the future place of work, get acquainted with the team. Chief Doctors should be interested in this approach. Working on the implementation and effectiveness of such systems is already underway. Moreover, the system must be flexible. If a student changes his mind about coming to one place, he needs to be offered another option”, Igor Diaghilev told.

The Head of the Personnel Service of the Ministry of Health Oksana Isakova, answering a question from one of the students, remarked that there was an opportunity to study in a targeted area outside the republic in large cities, but within the quota allocated by educational institutions.

At the end of the meeting, Igor Vladimirovich summed up that the profession of a medical worker was extremely difficult and responsible:

“There is no need to distance yourself from patients, your careful approach to them will provide a positive attitude and allow you to form a complete picture in which it will be easier to diagnose and minimize risks for patients. It is important to be able to go out to the patient”.

Such meetings, at which students can get answers to their questions from the leadership of the Ministry of Health, will become regular.
